Roll a D4

The d4 is the pyramid-shaped caltrop of the dice bag. Because it has no top face, a physical d4 is read from the number at its point (or along its base, depending on the style). This one simply tells you.

Tap to add a die:

What a d4 is for

  • Dagger, sickle and light hammer damage in D&D 5e
  • Magic Missile: each dart deals 1d4+1 force damage
  • A Potion of Healing restores 2d4+2 hit points
  • Bardic Inspiration starts as a d6, but many low-level riders use a d4 (Bless, Guidance, Resistance)

Want more dice or a modifier? Edit the box, for example 3d4+2.

Questions people ask

How do you read a d4?

Pyramid d4s show the result either at the top point or along the bottom edge, all three visible faces share that number. Our roller shows the number directly.

What is the average of a d4?

The average roll is 2.5, so 2d4+2 (a healing potion) averages 7 hit points.

Can I roll several d4 at once?

Yes. Set the count, or type notation such as 3d4+3 into the main dice roller.
