Why "random" in code is harder than it looks
A computer's generator gives out raw bits, not numbers from 1 to 37. The lazy fix, taking the remainder after division, quietly favours some results whenever the range does not divide evenly into the generator's output. RollPick throws those uneven leftovers away and draws again (rejection sampling), so a 1–37 draw is as fair as a 1–32 one. See the difference in action.
Ideas for the classroom
- Number students by the register and draw one to answer, with "No repeats" on so nobody is picked twice in a lesson.
- Generate 10 numbers from 1–100, then sort them to practise medians and ranges on data nobody could have prepared.
- Pick a page number to open a reader at random for a reading warm-up.
Picking from names rather than numbers? The list randomizer draws winners straight from a pasted list.
Questions people ask
How do I pick a random number between 1 and 100?
Tap the 1–100 preset and press Generate. Every whole number from 1 to 100 has exactly a 1% chance.
Can I generate numbers without repeats?
Yes. Tick "No repeats" and set how many you need. Numbers are drawn like balls from a bag, so each can appear only once. Handy for assigning seats, raffle tickets or presentation order.
How random is it?
Numbers come from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure generator, mapped to your range with rejection sampling so small numbers are not favoured. Math.random is never used.
What is the largest range I can use?
Any whole numbers between −1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000, and up to 1,000 results at a time.
Can I sort the results?
Yes, tick "Sort results". Leave it off to keep the order in which they were drawn.
