Dice probability calculator

Type any roll and get the exact odds of every total, plus the chance of beating a target. Works with modifiers, advantage, keep-highest and exploding dice.

Why 7 is the most common roll on two dice

Two dice have 6 × 6 = 36 equally likely pairs. Tap a total to light up every pair that makes it.

6 of 36 pairs make 7: a 16.7% chance, or 1 in 6.

Every total is a diagonal on the grid, and the longest diagonal runs corner to corner through the 7s. Add a third die and the triangle rounds into a bell; add more and it gets closer and closer to the normal curve, which is the central limit theorem at the kitchen table.

Six of the 36 pairs on 2d6 add up to 7, more than any other total, so a lucky-looking 7 is plain arithmetic. For another everyday pattern with a tidy cause, ahaboo narrates why the Moon has phases.

Watch a bell curve form

One die is flat: every face equally likely. Add dice and the middle totals pull ahead, because there are more combinations that land there.

1d6 ranges from 1 to 6, averages 3.5, and the single most likely totals are 3 and 4.

Questions people ask

How do you calculate dice probability?

Count the outcomes. For one fair die each face has 1/sides chance. For several dice, combine them: 2d6 has 36 equally likely pairs, and the chance of a total is the number of pairs that make it divided by 36. This calculator does the same counting exactly (by convolution) for any notation.

What is the probability of rolling a 6 on one die?

1 in 6, about 16.7%. The chance of at least one 6 in two dice is 11/36 (30.6%), not 2/6, because the 6-6 case is counted only once.

Does it handle advantage, keep highest and exploding dice?

Yes. Keep/drop (4d6kh3, 2d20kh1) is calculated exactly by enumerating every combination when that is feasible, and by 200,000 simulated rolls for very large pools (the result is marked "simulated"). Exploding dice are exact up to six explosions deep, far beyond any meaningful probability.

What is the 2d6 probability table?

2 and 12: 2.78% each; 3 and 11: 5.56%; 4 and 10: 8.33%; 5 and 9: 11.11%; 6 and 8: 13.89%; 7: 16.67%.
